Mikhail Dmitrievitch Prokhorov

  • Russian billionaire and politician
  • Degree in international economic relations
  • Place of birth: Moscow
  • Date of birth: May 03, 1965

Previously, Prokhorov made headlines only through his assets, companies and purchases of sport teams. In 2011 the third richest man of Russia went on the political stage with several scandals. Is he actually an independent candidate for presidency? By Stefan Bernhardt

Before the billionaire Prokhorov announced his candidacy for Russian presidency in 2012, he first commanded political attention because of his feud with the political party Right Cause. The party was founded by a union of the Union of the Right Forces and two other smaller parties. Prokhorov intended as its chairman and to enter the race for the State Duma Elections in 2011. Not everything went entirely according to plan, however; suddenly Prokhorov resigned, giving the reason that Right Cause is a puppet party of the Kremlin. This accusation corroborated previously existing suspicions. In December Prokhorov announced his presidential candidacy for the elections in March 2012, this time as an independent candidate.

Presently, Prokhorov profiles as an opponent to Putin and represents official liberal positions. Prokhorov can therefore count on winning some votes in the new Russian middle class demographic, especially because his liberal competitor Yavlinsky never announced his presidential candidacy. In the lower classes and in rural demographics, however, this oligarch may appeal to only a few potential voters. Prokhorov gives the opposition a new, young face despite persistently held rumors that he was placed by the Kremlin as a fake candidate against Putin. The question raised now is whether he is making a permanent commitment in politics or if this is just another jaunt of a multi-billionaire; all will be revealed after the 2012 Presidential Election.
